Argentina
beat the Ivory Coast 2-1 Saturday night in the first game of the World
Cup. This is Argentina’s fourth straight World Cup opener and they will
play Serbia-Montenegro on Friday.
Both Hernan Crespo and Javier Saviola scored in the first half. The
Ivory Coast defense was a little shaky. This was Ivories first time to
qualify, after getting past African power Cameroon. Ivory Coast got
their goal in the 82nd minute just missing a header, and then
converting from in front after the ball was played back in.
The Argentina fans, in their blue-and-white-striped shirts, filled the
other corner of the stadium. After the exciting Group C match with
end-to-end action, many fans say this may be the most exciting World Cup
ever.
Germany
opened the World Cut with a victory over Costa Rica. The 4-2
victory was watched by an estimated 1.5 billion people, according to
the Sydney Harold. Less than an hour after the opening ceremony the
match soon developed into an attacking spectacle, with shot after
shot raining down on goals. Three goals were scored in the first 20
minutes.
Paraguay
goalkeeper Justo Villar was injured and had to leave the Group B game
against England. Villar’s World Cup play appears to be over for this
year according to Paraguay coach Anibal Ruiz. His injury may take two
to three weeks or more to heel. England won the game 1-0.
Sweden and Trinidad played to a 0-0 draw in their Group B
opener. This was Trinidad’s World Cup debut. The result leaves Trinidad
& Tobago, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup finals;
joint second with Sweden after England had earlier beaten Paraguay 1-0.
Trinidad will face England next.
