If you like comedy or NASCAR, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky
Bobby” will not disappoint you. Will Farrell stars as champion driver,
Ricky Bobby, who learned to love fast driving as a child. As an adult
on a pit-crew, Bobby got the opportunity to drive when the crew’s
regular driver decided to take a break while the race was going on.
Bobby became the star of the race.
John C. Reilly (Gangs of New York and The Aviator) co-starred playing
the role of Bobby’s sidekick, Cal. They were a winning team until a
Formula One driver decided to join the team. The competition was fierce
and they got tangled in an accident sending Bobby into losing streak
that finally forced him out of NASCAR altogether.
But the story does not end there. There has got to be a comeback for
this driver. After losing his wife, license and reputation, his father
came back into his life to give him the support he missed growing up.
Farrell played a big role in making the movie, according to Alan
Silverman of Voice of America. Farrell said "I can't really say that it
came from any one person or thought or anything. As Adam and I wrote the
script it just evolved. He's just kind of an amalgamation, in my mind,
of the brash, cocky, Southern race car driver. It's just our fun way of
playing around with the stereotype.”
Which are better drivers - NASCAR or Formula One?
His wife Carly Bobby, played by Leslie Bibb, was the typical
gold-digging wife who wanted the lead driver, not a has-been. "Sometimes
people think 'less is more;' Carly thinks 'more is more.' I love her
because she is so blunt," Leslie explains. "Don't ask her opinion,
because you will not like the response and she always does it with a
smile, which is very Southern, I think. 'I smile, so it's okay.'"
There was one subtle slam against NASCAR drivers in the film. The
Formula One driver that dropped down to NASCAR was able to drive NASCAR
while reading a book, drinking a latte, among other distractions. In
the end though, even the formula one driver was no match for the star of
NASCAR.
There were cameo appearances by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Darrell Walltrip.
Talladega Nights is now playing in the theaters.
