Former Architect passed away from Mesothelioma - An Asbestos Cancer

A former architect who had worked with asbestos-containing products almost 40 years ago developed mesothelioma and died two months after being diagnosed with mesothelioma. While working as an architect in the early 1970s, he had to be present at various construction sites. Construction sites often contain asbestos fibers. This is because asbestos was used in a wide range of construction products. The fact that asbestos is heat resistant and inexpensive made it attractive for use in construction products.

Asbestos-containing products can release lethal asbestos fibers when the products are cut or hammered. Asbestos fibers are typically not visible to the human eye and can remain suspended in the air for extended periods of time. As such, asbestos fibers can be inhaled. Inhaled asbestos fibers become trapped in internal organs such as the lungs. Asbestos fibers can remain in the body for decades and lead to the development of asbestos cancers such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Patient Wins Over $20 Million in Mesothelioma Case

A nursing professor suffering from the asbestos cancer mesothelioma won more than $20 million from a mesothelioma lawsuit. It is believed that the professor was exposed to asbestos while washing the clothes of her grandfather, an insulation worker, when she was a teenager in the 1960s. Her grandfather installed asbestos containing insulation from December 1968 to the spring of 1969. It is likely that asbestos fibers clung to the grandfather's clothes and the professor was exposed to those fibers when she cleaned her grandfather's clothes. Such a form of asbestos exposure is known as secondary exposure.

Asbestos exposure is a common cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of organs such as the lungs. Mesothelioma can develop decades after exposure to asbestos has taken place. The average life expectancy of mesothelioma patients is about 18 months from the time of mesothelioma diagnosis.

It’s the newest cancer fad: Send in a sample of your spit, a company analyzes your DNA, and you get a report telling you whether you’re at risk for a particular type of cancer. In theory, you can then take steps to avoid the disease.

For instance, are you worried about your chances of getting breast or ovarian cancer? There are DNA tests that look for particular genes that have been shown to increase the risk for those diseases. Recent studies show that women who test positive for one of two genetic mutations have an 85% chance of developing breast or ovarian cancer by the time they turn 70.
