A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can occur as a result of a sudden, violent blow to the head. When the brain collides with the skull, the collision causes bruising to the brain, nerve fibers tear and bleeding occurs.

A traumatic brain injury can result from an automobile accident, a fall, a job-related injury, an assault or any number of ways. The severity of the injury depends on the part of the brain affected. A mild traumatic brain injury often causes headache and temporary confusion. A severe traumatic brain injury can be fatal.

Symptoms of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

• A brief period of unconsciousness
• Amnesia for events immediately before and immediately after the injury
• Headache
• Confusion
• Dizziness
• Blurred vision
• Problem concentrating

Symptoms of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

• Persistent headache
• Repeated vomiting
• Seizures or convulsions
• Inability to awaken
• Dilation of one or both pupils
• Weakness of extremities
• Loss of coordination
• Profound confusion and agitation

The effects of a traumatic brain injury are wide-ranging physically and psychologically. When the brain tissue is injured, it swells and creates a second problem, pressure building within the skull. As the injured brain matter swells, it presses against the skull causing additional damage.

Treatment for TBI

The treatment for a mild traumatic brain injury usually consists of rest and over the counter pain relief for headache. A severe traumatic brain injury requires emergency hospitalization and intensive care. If you survive a traumatic brain injury, the road to recovery is long and hard and costly.
