Stock Market News – Markets Open Mixed in Asia

autodesk logo

(Best Syndication News) After six-straight days of declines in the United States, stock markets in Asia are opening mixed early Monday (see stock charts below). European sovereign debt worries continue to fester as markets drop more than three percent in one week.

The Hang Seng Index (Hong Kong) is down 60 points on Monday while the Shanghai composite index (China) and Nikkei 225 (Japan) are up 6.7 points (+0.29%) and 28 points (+0.34%) respectively.

Gold was higher on Friday but only marginally higher for the week (see the survey #2 settle price chart below). Since the settle, June gold on the COMEX gained $5.40 to $1,597.30 a troy ounce.

Crude oil prices continued to drop on Friday. Since the close of trading, light sweet crude oil (WTI) on the NYMEX advanced 40 cents to $92.20. Natural gas settled higher while heating oil prices were lower.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) slipped 3.52 percent last week (see world market chart below). The broader S&P 500 index fared even worse than the blue chips, dropping 4.30 percent on the week.

Only 84 of the 485 constituents in our widely-held index were higher on Friday (see the widely-held index chart below). Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK) was the big loser, down nearly 13 percent.

A weak guidance estimate pushed volume of trading up 700 percent above average. After the session close, ADSK continued to fall, down another 13 cents to $30.13.

First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) was another loser, down more than eight percent in one day. Although stiff import tariffs could help the company, a pending class-action lawsuit put downward pressure on the stock.

The volume was average and in the after-hours FSLR continued to fall, down three cents to $13.63. There was a bid of $13.55 on 200 shares and an ask of $13.64 on 300 shares. There will be a shareholder meeting this Wednesday.

After three straight days of declines, SUPERVALU INC. (NYSE:SVU) dropped more than six percent Friday. The volume was up only 25 above average and the share price fell another penny to $4.64 in the after-hours.

There were some winners. salesforce.com, inc. (NYSE:CRM) gained nearly nine percent Friday. Although expenses increased last quarter, the growth of sales exceeded analyst expectations.

In the after-hours, CRM picked up steam again, up another 65 cents (+0.45%) to $146.23. There was a bid of $145.50 on 300 shares and an ask of $146.16 on 100 shares.
