Stock Market News – Financial Sector Leads Stocks Lower

Logos

(Best Syndication News) Stocks are opening higher in Asia Monday despite a meltdown of the financial sector in the United States and looming uncertainty in Europe (see stock charts below).

The Shanghai Composite Index (China) added 2.46 points (+0.10%) early Monday, while the Nikkei 225 (Japan) and Hang Seng Index (Hong Kong) advanced 23 points (0.26%) and 1.71 points (0.01%) respectively. On Friday all three indexes were lower (see the world market chart below).

Brent Crude oil advanced while most other commodities were lower (see the survey #2 settle price chart below). Light sweet crude oil (WTI) fell 95 cents on Friday and fell another 69 cents to $95.44 after the close.

Gold prices slipped more than eleven dollars during Friday’s session and continued to fall another $5.40 to $1,578.60 after the settle. Silver, platinum, palladium, and copper were all down one percent or more.

Equities were not spared either. Only 192 out of 485 stocks in our widely held index were higher Friday (see the widely-held stock chart below). Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) fell nearly 14 percent during the session. The volume of trading was up 250 percent above average.

The natural gas and oil exploration company stumbled after an earnings report earlier in the month. Natural gas prices had been in the dumps, but the trend has been higher over the last week and month.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) was the second biggest decliner in our index. The bank has not recovered from their announced hedging loss.

Since the close of trading, JPM fell another 30 cents to $36.66. There was a bid $36.66 on 2,800 shares and an ask of $36.69 on 100 shares.

MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc. (NYSE:WFR) was another laggard in the index. The stock price has been lower eight straight days and last week the wafer maker announced a bigger than expected loss last quarter.

Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE:JWN) slipped nearly five percent during the trading day. The retailer missed on earnings in the first quarter. The company announced earnings of 70 cents per share after the market closed on Thursday. Analysts expected 75 cents.

In the after-hours JWN jumped five cents to $51.01.
