Two Brands of Jaggery Candy imported from India contains excessive amounts of Lead
(Best Syndication News) - The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced that two brands of jaggery candy imported from India contained excessive amounts of lead and should not be eaten. The Laxmi Brand Rewadi Jaggery candy and the HB Brand Rewari Gur-Flat Jaggery candy both tested above the California lead level limit of 0.10 parts per million (ppm).
The CDPH agency tested the candy and found that both had exceeded the federal levels for lead contamination. Laxmi Brand Rewadi Jaggery candy tested at 0.15 ppm. The HB Brand Rewari Gur-Flat Jaggery tested at 1.10 ppm of lead.
The Laxmi Brand Rewadi Jaggery candy is packaged in 200 gram (7 ounce) portions. The package has clear plastic and there is a red and yellow border printed on it. The bottom of the package has the words “REWADI (JAGGERY)” in black text with a yellow background.
The HB Brand Rewari Gur-Flat Jaggery is sold in package weights of 800 grams (28 ounces). The clear plastic bags have a red label with “HB” on the top in a yellow background. In the center of the label the words “Rewari Gur – Flat (Jaggery Candy)” is written.
Both packages contain candy that is flat and oval shaped. The candy is light brown in color and they contain seeds.
Consumers who have the candy should not eat it. The CDPH recommends pregnant women and children who have eaten the candy should consult with their doctors to see if a lead contamination blood test is needed.
