California officials say Anthem Blue Cross rate increase excessive

(Best Syndication News) - The Anthem Blue Cross health insurance company have scheduled a May 1st rate increase for 120,000 of its members which prompted the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) to publicly call it “unreasonable.” The DMHC is not able to put a halt to the increase premiums. Those that have an Individual PPO plan with Anthem Blue Cross that is under the DMHC jurisdiction are involved with the premium rate increase.

The DMHC wrote to Anthem Blue Cross on April 7th, asking why the company is going to increase the premiums on May 1st when similar plans that are under the California Department of Insurance had a decrease. When the officials at DMHC compared the rate increase for their plans they oversee to the ones under the California Department of Insurance they noticed the rates were 3 to 4 percent higher.

Lynne Randolph, spokesperson with the DMHC had expressed that the agency will “publicly express our disappointment that Anthem Blue Cross didn’t lower the rates as we requested.”
