How Does High Glycemic Foods Cause Wrinkles?

What do enjoying smooth, sweet desserts have to do with your skin?

Almost everyone knows that sugary desserts cause us to gain weight and can lead to diabetes and other complications. But have you heard that the sugar we take in from all kinds of processed foods can make us look older than we are?

Most of the foods we eat contain sugar. The breakfast cereals that we chow down in the mornings, that beautiful glass of orange juice we think is good for us and the prepared foods including the flavored yogurts that we believe is so beneficial for our health and longevity; all are probably loaded with added sugar.

It seems that researchers have found a link between processed or added sugar and wrinkled, dull skin! The culprit seems to be high glycemic foods including refined sugars, corn syrup, dextrose, molasses and the much dreaded high fructose corn syrup! Added sugars are present in a lot of foods that we take, so make sure that you read each label and find out the number of teaspoons of sugar you eat everyday.

How To Calculate Sugar Content

Just divide the number of grams per serving in the label by 4 to find out the number of teaspoons. It’s easier to keep the teaspoons in check. In a day, an average adult should eat no more than 10 teaspoons of sugar. This includes the sugar from all items that we gulp down in 24 hours. Remember that one can of cola has 10 teaspoons of sugar. Drink plenty of water instead.

The naturally occurring sugars in fruits, vegetables, etc are beneficial for our entire body, including the skin. So don’t even think of avoiding those. However, for the sake of our health, it is wise to maintain a list of high glycemic and low glycemic foods.

How High GI Foods Cause Wrinkles

Most of us are aware that if we eat more sugar than we need, our bodies get wider and heavier. However, the only connection we knew of sugar and a healthy, glowing skin is a jar of sugar scrub! Well, now we see that although sugar is wonderful for sloughing off the dead cells and rejuvenating our facial glow, it can do a lot of damage internally. The culprit seems to be a biological process called glycation, which attaches to the proteins (for example, collagen) in our body and create something called Advanced Glycation End products or AGEs proteins.

Well, these above mentioned AGEs are actually bad guys who attack the good guys who keep skin firm and elastic. While young, this attack doesn’t do much damage because the skin can easily repair itself. Unfortunately, after 35, this sugar damage can be devastating!

By the way, a high sugar diet also affects the type of collagen the body creates. The process of glycation also harms the body’s defenses, the natural antioxidant enzymes.

Wait, there is good news. Even if your skin has been damaged, you can heal it and make it healthier by using good commonsense including a balanced diet, anti-aging serums, lotions or creams.

Tips To Avoid High GI Foods

Here are some ways in which you can watch out for that excess sugar:

Eat a nutritious diet everyday. Nothing can replace the anti-oxidants from the berries, nuts, fruits and vegetables that we eat. Avoid white bread, sugar, most rice except Basmati, biscuits and refined foods of all types.

Remember that even healthy whole grains, fruits and vegetables which are essential to our diet can add sugar to our diet. This form of sugar is not as damaging to the skin as processed sugar. However, excess sugar in any form should be avoided.

Exercise everyday. Aerobic workouts, lifting weights and yoga can be beneficial to the entire body including the largest organ in our body, the skin.

By diligently watching the sugar in your diet, you can reduce most of the aging and maintain the suppleness and health of your skin.
