Which netbook screen to choose: 9-inch or 10-inch?

Netbooks – those tiny Intel Atom-powered laptops that come for ultra-cheap prices sans a DVD drive – are getting increasingly popular in India. Companies are now also tying up with telecom carriers to provide Internet-ready versions of the mini-notebooks.

But one of the most frequent questions that people have about buying one of the netbooks is what size of screen to go in for – 9-inch or 10-inch? Obviously, when a male mind measures anything in inches, the first reaction is ‘the bigger it is, the better it is’. And that’s true to an extent, as the wider screen will give you bigger pictures. But just like with other things in life, small packages do offer good things.

The 9-inch screens usually come lined with speakers on the side, while the 10-inch ones have the speakers at the base of the laptop. The biggest problem with all of the netbooks is their low audio output. So when a 10-inch netbook is on your lap, the sound is blasting into your belly; the 9-inch, though, directs the audio straight to your ears. This might sound like nitpicking, but the difference is quite noticeable for anyone who has used two such netbooks side-by-side.

The other advantage of a 9-inch netbook over a 10-inch is that both have the same amount of pixels, only they are more tightly packed in the 9-inch one. You will read a lot of reviews saying that most of the 9-inch laptops offer better picture quality and this is the main reason for it.

So when you go to buy a netbook, decide what you want to do with it first. If your major usage is going to be work-related and Internet browsing, then the 10-inch Laptops are a better bet. But if multimedia is the key for you, video and audio speakers quality will be better on the 9-inch ones. Of course, if you are planning to use headphones on your netbook anyway, then unless you’re very picky about picture quality, go in for the 10-inch ones: sometimes, bigger is simply better!
