Over $1 Million Awarded in Mesothelioma Cancer Lawsuit

A Texas jury awarded over $1 million to the wife of an engineer who died from mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma is a cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. Frequently, mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs. Mesothelioma often develops 30 or more years after exposure to asbestos. Thus, people with mesothelioma tend to be older people. Mesothelioma is a threat not only to life but also to the financial well-being of older people who may have already retired. A mesothelioma diagnosis imposes burdensome medical expenses and threatens to deplete money saved for retirement.

In the mesothelioma lawsuit involving the engineer, it is believed that the engineer was exposed to asbestos from his job. The engineer had worked with asbestos-laden additives to drilling lubricants. The engineer's asbestos exposure occurred when he inhaled dust from asbestos-containing cement additives that were used in a cement mixing hopper. Inhaled asbestos fibers can become trapped in the lungs or other organs. These fibers can lead to the development of cancers such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Unfortunately, many jobs involve the risk of asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. Workers at risk of developing mesothelioma are construction workers, mechanics, pipefitters, plumbers, machinists, boilermakers, shipyard workers and others. Many workers are at risk because asbestos was used in a wide range of products. Asbestos does not burn and therefore, it was used in brakes, other friction products and in insulation material.

The engineer afflicted with mesothelioma passed away earlier this year.
