(Best Syndication News) Americans are divided on many issues including the War in Afghanistan (see graphic below). But a new poll suggests that Afghanistan don’t want to fight the war and many are calling it “Obama’s Vietnam”. Americans are skeptical that Afghanistan can pull itself together.
Only 39 percent of Americans favor sending more troops to Afghanistan, while 59 percent are opposed to it, according to a CNN poll taken between October 16th and 18th. The poll suggests that Americans are afraid of the “Vietnam Syndrome” where we become embroiled in an unwinnable and unending war. In fact, 52 percent of those polled believe that Afghanistan has turned into another “Vietnam” while 46 percent disagree.

A decorated Vietnam War veteran, Senator John Kerry, disagrees with most Americans. “We are here in Afghanistan because people attacked us here in this most significant attack against the United States since Perl Harbor”, Kerry said. “We are here because there are still people at large who are plotting against the United States of America. And we are here because the stability of this region is critical with strategic interests to the United States.”
Interestingly, most American agree with Kerry on this last point. Sixty percent of those polled agree it is necessary to keep troops in Afghanistan to prevent terrorism in the U.S.. Only 39 percent disagree. But at the same time, 57 percent say they oppose the war and only 41 percent support it.
Keating Holland, the polling director for CNN, said he believes that most Americans don’t believe the war should be fought “at any cost”. Older Americans were more likely to see the similarities between Vietnam and Afghanistan.
