[Best Syndication News] A Class Action Lawsuit was filed in Superior Court of New Jersey in Middlesex County against Denny's to force sodium content disclosure on each of its meal and put a warning notice of the high sodium content next to the meal that contains high levels. While most Americans with high blood pressure should have no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day, some of Denny's menu items have over 4,000 to 5,000 milligrams of sodium.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is working alongside New Jersey firms of Galex Wolf, LLC and Williams Cuker Berezofsky to get Denny's to alert customers of the sodium content in their meals.

Diets that have high sodium levels are known to promote high blood pressure, which further increases a person's chance of developing heart disease or stroke. Heart disease is the leading cause of the death in the United States, and stroke is the third leading cause of death.

"Denny's is slowly sickening its customers," said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson. "For those Americans who should be most careful about limiting their sodium, such as people middle-aged and older, African-Americans, or people with existing high blood pressure, it's dangerous to eat at Denny's. Denny's customers deserve to be warned about the considerable health risk posed by many of these meals."

The plaintiff that they are representing is Nick DeBenedetto, who is a 48-year-old resident of Tinton Falls, NJ. DeBenedetto was a frequent customer at Denny's restaurant located in East Brunswick and Brick, NJ. DeBenedetto is taking medication to control his high blood pressure and at home follows a low sodium diet. But unknowingly, DeBenedetto would order his favorite Denny's menu items of Moons Over My Hammy which has 2,580 mg of sodium, or the Super Bird turkey sandwich which has 2,610 milligrams of sodium. This is much over the sodium he should have for the whole day. He was shocked to find this out and felt like if he would have known this information before ordering he would have never chose those foods.

The worst breakfast offender on the Denny's menu is the Meat Lover's Scramble. This meal comes with two eggs scrambled with chopped bacon, diced ham, crumbled sausage, and cheddar cheese, and comes with a two strips of bacon, two sausage links, hash browns and two pancakes alongside. The sodium content for this meal is a whopping 5,690 milligrams.

The worst dinner or lunch menu item at Denny's is a full meal of a bowl of clam chowder, with a Spicy Buffalo Chicken Melt and a side of seasoned fries. This meal would deliver a shocking 6,700 milligrams of sodium. Beside the high sodium content it also delivers way to many calories at 1,700 calories; this is about a whole days worth of calories for most adults.

Denny's and CSPI were in private negotiations that ended earlier this year in an attempt to lower the sodium content on their menu items. There was small changes that occurred with a slight sodium reduction in their cheese sauce, shrimp skewers and kids' meals. CSPI wanted to see more changes over the whole menu, and that just didn't happen.

The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends for otherwise healthy individuals to consume no more that 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. The CDC also said that salt intake should be no more than 1,500 milligrams per day if you are 40 years of age or older, you are African American or if you have high blood pressure. The CDC continues to explain on their website that 77 percent of the salt intake comes from restaurant or processed foods while eating home cooked from scratch meals contributes only 5 percent of the sodium intake.

While Denny's is just one of many offenders, it would be wise to be aware that most restaurant foods are going to loaded with sodium, along with frozen prepared meals, and canned meals as well. Below is CSPI representative talking about high sodium content in several restaurant meals.
